To what Degree...

A conversation with my sister-in-law sparked the topic for today's post.  How many people actually end up working in the field in which they received their college degree?

College was a great experience for me.  I was a very shy high schooler and college really brought me out of my shell (maybe a little too much).  The problem, however, was that up until my junior year I had the mind set that I was going to college to play volleyball and not get an education.  My first couple years I treated college like I did high school.  I got very good grades, but I was not thinking ...I am here to get an education so that I can get a good job.

I don't really remember the actual day it hit me, but I finally got to a point when I realized after college volleyball is not going to pay the bills.  I have always liked everything history, science, art, I guess you can already figure out from this blog I don't have a real focus on just one thing.  Getting back to the focus of this blog though and the point I am making with this story is that it just amazes me that I ended up actually working in the field of work that I went to school for.  I got my degree in communications/journalism with an emphasis in advertising and a minor in marketing.  I currently work as an advertising sales representative for b2b magazines.  For the record, I also play rec volleyball on Thursday nights.  Growing up I always wanted to be a Vet because I am pretty sure I thought they just got to play with animals all day long, but once I realized that wasn't true I really never had a real idea of what I wanted to be when I grow up.  Advertising Sales Rep never really crossed my mind.

So here are my questions...

1. Do you work in the field of work you went to school for?
2. Are you happy?
3. Does anyone actually become what they wanted to be when they grow up?

I like this topic, because it is true, so many people don't do what they went to college for. Some end up in a job that someone who didn't go to college is their boss. Brings me to my point. Is college necessary? Well, depends on the person. Let's examine the common college student..... some people need the education to actually do their desired field, some need a few extra years to mature to where they can be productive in society, and some are scared and hope that by going to college that they will find a purpose or meaning to their adult life. College is expensive and not everyone has scholarships or parents to foot the bill. Should these people that are going to school solely on the reason that they are taught to go to college, just accept that that is what they should do? Guess what, not everybody needs to go to college. It starts early in life that only people who succeed go to college. BS! A lot fail that go to college. And even more succeed that don't. In the end, do what you love. Do what you have a passion for. Never settle. Life is very short. Be happy first!

I think that is a great point! I believe for a lot of careers you learn a lot more on the job than in the classroom. I think for me college was a lot more about growing up rather than the actual education I got. Perhaps being out in the 'real world' right after high school would benefit people like me to see the real benefit of higher education?!...

For me, college provided a lot of education that I needed to pursue a career in professional writing. It also gave me insight into the the variety of jobs that desire that background. What I do now is by no means my dream job but I am afforded the opportunity to use my skills and be creative. I actually know quite a few people that are currently using their degrees. However, I can only think of one person who actually has their complete dream job and it's pretty inspiring. Luckily for this individual, they are using their college degree as well as their passions/interests.
